Rejection: that's life, boys.

I won't lie to you: it's always been a dream of mine to write a Carrie-esque blog entry, or a relationship-related column in a newspaper or magazine, and I think I've finally found the chance. Goodness knows I kind of want to be Carrie - just a little bit.

Mainly for the whole sitting around in my underwear with a cigarette in hand in front of my computer, gazing out the window murmuring "and I couldn't help but wonder..." (what a romanticised vision, I know).

Sitting at our usual spot at uni today with the usual Monday morning gals - tea in hand, of course - our conversation turned, as it almost always does, to the ridiculous stupidity and strangeness that one might encounter during nearly any interaction with the male 'species' - and I say species, because boys in general really do seem to be a part of a whole other type of human being.

Ah, yes. This species of mankind does often seem to be depicted by us ladies as subjecting us to its incomprehensible behaviour and constantly breaking hearts.

Yet, it was Marina who taught us how to be heartbreakers.

Sitting with the girls we reflected upon the harshness of rejection. And I couldn't help but wonder: is a girl a heartbreaker just because she rejects someone whom she was friendly with over a number of weeks? And by friendly, I mean texting often and having coffee together? Surely you couldn't possibly owe another person anything if only after a mere few weeks? Yet, if I were the one being rejected, would I feel like I merited some sort of explanation?

Could we even call rejection a type of character building, or is this simply a way out of feeling the guilt of rejecting someone?

It's easy, of course, for me to say rejection is a type of character-building, but rejection is, after all, a part of life. Maybe we should all take a leaf out of Marina's book, and feel the full force of feminine power and strength that she seems to advocate in her anthem.

To be continued...

Hello blogger.com

Well, hello! I've been staring at my blank blog for a couple of days now, and have finally decided at 11.26 at night to begin my first post - why is it always at such late hours of the night that you get a sudden sense of inspiration to do things like write or draw or do anything really?

I suppose I should probably introduce myself!

I'm a uni student currently in my second year of arts, completing a double major in literature and art history and a diploma of languages in French bla, bla, bla, boring, boring, etc.

Although, it's not actually boring; in fact I love my course. But you probably don't really want to know all the nitty gritty details of my study life, so I'll skip this.

Apart from reading the millions of books prescribed by my university and looking at paintings and attempting to speak French, I love to bake, and, even more importantly, love to feed people. My mum is a fantastic cook, who has published cookbooks - and I'm sure this is not the last you will hear about them. So, on the side of my arts degree, I love cooking, eating, feeding others, and taking photos of food - not just for Instagram, although, I will admit, I am a bit of a serial instagrammer...

So!

The point that it has taken me exactly 223 words to get to is that this blog will be a place where I will post photos of food, the occasional rant, and little details about books and films - did I mention I work in a bookshop? Books are kind of my life at the moment, so expect to hear - or read - lots about the novels I'm reading at the moment.

Whilst I'm on this topic, I'll add that I'm currently attempting, though not really attempting very hard, to read Poe's 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'. I'm really enjoying it so far, but need to find the motivation to actually sit and read it, which is a shame, because Poe is such a literary genius.

Anyway!

I'll leave you with this photo of the delicious cake my mum made for my sister's 30th birthday on the weekend as a taste (oh, what a little play on words I inadvertently created) of what's to come: chocolate mud cake, layered with butter cream icing and raspberry jam, covered in icing, berries and rose petals. Amazing!
